I'm not a regular member of your audience, but I am 'aware of your art'.
I think there is nothing wrong with focusing on one character, but it makes it harder to build a larger universe when every other character has to hold up when compared to that one character your core audience knows and loves. Establishing a larger cast will also be helpful when you need a "low-key bad guy" in a scene.
